mast step and grounding

My mast step has been open since I had the boat and never had a problem
with leaks or drips. Granted I've never had green water over the bow,
When I reinforced the mast step I found evidence of previous water
intrusion, but I have never noticed any problems myself. The bottom of
my mast reinforcement is open directly to the base of the mast.

With the grounding issue. When I bought the boat the mast was connected
through a copper strip to a "dynaplate" a copper scintered plate
attached to the outside of the hull. I believe the dynaplate is
supposed to dissipate any current from a lightning strike.
