If by "mast light", you mean the white light on the front of the mast that shines forward, it is called a "steaming" light, and is required to be used at night on a sailboat when under power. You are not legally required to use a spreader (also known as deck) light, although they are a good safety item when you have to work teh foredck after dark.

The Geeze factor
We do a bit of evening sailing on our local lake and I have had fishermen pull up beside me in their bass boats and tell me, "Your front light ain't right. That white light goes in the back!" It amazes me at times how many don't know the simple rules -- especially that of sail-v-power right of way!!! Do your research and be happy in the knowledge that you are safer than most. Especially knowing to ask questions instead of assuming the answers. Happy sailin' y'all!
