:cry: have purchased 80 irwin sloop 37ft.on the way home from fl to tn discovered mast settling appx.1.5 to 2 in on deck.has any one had similar exp and how did you fix it?thank you. 8/15/09

Keel stepped mast or deck stepped? Regardless its either compression post, cabin top issues (water?), or compression in mast step area of bildge. Many options for repair once you know where compression occured. Check to see if door leading into head will close as well.

I think your compression post may be giving way and it may be hidden from view. It should be located at the inboard edge of the door to the fwd state room, and at the edge of the fwd stbd bulkhead of the main salon. There are two accesses through the deck that will allow you to see the bottom of it, one in the main salon fwd and one in the fwd SR aft. There is a step under the compression post. The post in my 37 is aluminum but I believe most were wood.
Any way look there first. There shouldn't be that much compressibility in the deck

This is not uncommon with deck stepped masts and the Irwin in particular. The deck is compressing under the mast. Unfortunately the fix will entail removing the mast. cutting out the section of the deck under it, saving the fiberglass top section, beefing up and repairing the deck, we generally remove the core material and replace will all fiberglass, and reinstall the fiberglass top section you cut out. If you are not good with this kind of work get a professional. It can be done so there are no indications the repair was made. Now having said all of this, it is possible although not likely the problem is your compression post. Of course, check that first. Chuck
On my '68 Islander the foot of the compression post was rotted but also the blocking under the post was failing. The deck is not likely to be two inches thick ,so the deck is not likely where the problem lays. When you hear hoof beats in america look for horses.
