I have a hunter 23 (1986) . the mast is very heavy to lift given the placement and lack of leverage/ mostly I'm not able to lift it .

anyone have options on the lifting/lowering of this bad boy?
Thanks,

Roger E.

I’ve owned Lesismor (rigged with a Kenyon mast) for ten years now, and step the mast at least a dozen times each year, sometimes on the water (always single-handed). I’ve had a few miss-haps in that time as well. My last lifting rig wasn’t easily transported, so I came up with my latest rig this year. Photos are available on my page.

I believe there is a lot offered on this subject that can be found in the archives.

If you are just rigging on a lake for the season have someone just help you do this as instructed in the owner’s manual.

Mast Stepping 101

There are lots of different set-ups that work equally as well. Google "mast stepping" to find a larger variety. Here are a couple of video links that may help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX9TRjBKCQ8 (a vid of stepping a cat 22) and http://www.sailingtexas.com/Movies/Hunter23lowermast/hunter23lowermast.html (lowering the mast on a hunter 23) I made a setup like the second video and it works well with 2 people but something is needed to keep the mast from going sideways as it goes up and down. That looks like a good setup that Mark Major has as well.
