I plan to attach a white steaming light to the mast of my Hunter 23. Most other sailors in the club have their's about a foot above the spreader. When I was at the Chicago boat show, the Hunter sales person suggested I put it about a foot below the spreader. He did not give a reason. Does anyone know why I should not follow the rule of thumb of the rest of my club and put it above the spreader? The other boats in the club are either ODay 23, 25 or Precision 23's. Is my mast so bendy that putting it above the spreader is a bad idea? Any comments will be welcome. Good sailing Bill Leathen

mine is above the spreader. Maybe your dealer was incorrect.

A slight correction

is that my understanding of a steaming light (masthead light) is one used ONLY when under motor power. The masthead light (white) is mounted on the mast and is visible from ahead around to an angle of 22.5 degrees abaft the beam on both sides. The only rule for mounting the light is that it be above the sidelights. The white running light (sternlight) is installed as near the stern as possible and be visible astern from an angle of 22.5 degrees abaft the beam on either side. The anchor light, on the other hand, should be mounted at the top of the mast and show 360-degree white light.
