I went to take my mast down and the four rivets at the base sheared off. Is this a common occurance? Just got the boat (19' Weekender) and included with it was a supply of rivets and pop rivet gun. Any advice greatly appreciated.
Terry - Sounds like it was a coomon occurance on that boat! No, I don't know of this happening regularly to others. Which rivets are we talking about? The ones holding the tabernackle fitting? Others? My guess is there is some slop in something that is allowing the mast to load the rivets inappropriately. Where in Maine are you? Maybe we can look at it together. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
Justin, Thanks for the reply. I just got the boat in March and immediately put up the mast up while it was on the trailer. I'm thinking that the stays weren't tight enough and the movement stressed the rivets. I wondered why the previous owner included lots of spare rivets and a pop rivet gun. Just put it in last night. Lots to learn!
