Does anyone know the correct amount of mast rake for an 1984 O'day 26? When we bought it from the previous owner, it had about 12 inches of rake. We think this may be too much. The boat does have quite a bit of weatherhelm. We're looking to make an adjustment, but we definitely don't want leehelm. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

12 Inch Mast Rake?

I also have a 26 and with the adustment that I have in my stays I am not able to get more than and inch or two. That said even, if I had the ability to go twelve inches I probably would not try it. Do you have many stress cracks around the tabernacle? That could be a tell tale. Do you have roller furling? It almost sounds to me that the forestay is too long and the backstay too short.

Charles, You took the words right out of my mouth, because I was going to ask that same question about the fore stay being too long. One of our yacht club members has an 86 O'Day 26, and it always used to sit higher in the stern when it was in the water. I think that they have corrected this problem by shifting some ballast inside the cabin, but their mast was never that far aft. I would definitely move the mast forward and maybe use a plumb bob to try and get the 2" aft rake, needed. If it turns out that the fore stay is too long, that could be fixed by cutting off the toggle fitting and swaging a new one at the right fore stay length, even if means having the Gennie re-cut. A stay tension gage would come in handy for this process too. Joe

Stays Reversed?

Thinking about the problem is it possible that the forestay and back stay were swapped?

12"?

I to have a 26' hull#272. 12" mast rake is crazy, would diffently take a long look at the lenght of the fore and back stay, would have to agree with the consensus on this one, most likley swapped.

Mast Rake and Stay Length on 26

I replied to this yesterday and it looked like my reply posted. Now the question is where did it post or did Phil remove my post? Does anybody have literature from Punta Gorda or any other official sounding place as to the Stay lengths on the 26? My mast on my 26 and the mast on another 26 near me look to be the same length as the mast of a 25 shoal version. Does anybody know if this is fact? I can tell you that the boom on the my 26 is longer than the boom on the 25, by about at least 6 inches? Rudy said that they were the same, hum. Somewhere, I have the upper side stay lengths on my boat because I replaced them. But I did that by sending my original ones to the rigger. He said that they were both the same length and gave me news that were twins. When I tried to measure them they never came out exactly equal. The rigger said he has to measure them a special way, but double checked my comment and said that they were really equal (which I expected, but). Ed K 26
