My mast is off the boat and going back on Monday. How much rake should I put in my Kenyon mast before stepping it?

Mast Bow in an H-34

Ed, I think Joe is talking about the built in bow that the B&R rig is set up with before stepping.. Joe, The number is 4-5", but I have a file that has the real numbers and how to set it and measure it.. The file will not upload to the site because it is a "Word" file.. Send me a priv ate message and I will forward the file to your email.. Good luck with it !

Claude,
If you send me a copy of that file, I'll put it up on my webspace in Word and PDF. And then post a link so everyone can grab it.

But the H34, the one with a Kenyon mast, was not a B&R rig so far as I remember. Wasn't it just a single spreader, no sweep?

The "old" 34's were all B&G.. but they have backstays.. They had both Selden and Kenyon masts, I think, Ed..

Nope, you are right Claude. I just checked some pictures. Double spreaders and swept back. Still not sure how you would do rake with that.

Ed, the mast bow, is set with the mast supported horizontally and a line run from top to the gooseneck.. The "diamond" shrouds are adjusted so that mast bows, (concave to sail track) and the line stands about 4.5" away from the sail track..The swept back spreaders push a bow in the mast as the diamonds are tightened. That bow stays in the mast when it is stepped and the other shrouds tightened. Pretty sure that the procedure for doing that is what Joe is needing..

I think they were Isomat not Selden. I also thought that the early ones did have a Kenyon spar but I did not have one, so I am not sure.

The instructions for the Isomat spar setup/tuning can be found in the resource library. Jim Seaman has them linked.

This is the general setup for a B&R Rig.

Remember the B&R Rigs started on the Hunters around '83-'84. These B&R's had backstays.

Identify your Spar.

My 1983 (late 83 as I have some '84 "features") has a Kenyon mast and Kloudie is correct in his description as to how to set the bend (it is not "rake" which might be causing some of the confusion here. Rake is the tilt back of the whole mast- ie if you hung a weighted line from the top with the mast up, it would touch the boom some distance aft of the gooseneck. The description of the process is right- you tighten the diamonds which are the shrouds with the lower ends terminating at the mast just above the lower spreader and just above the base of the mast. I tighten the upper ones first, tightening equally then the lower ones. I have marked the threaded studs with tape so I know about where I should be. If my memory is correct ( it is almost a year since the last launch so I might be wrong, the standard width piece of electrical tape is about 1/2" from the top of the threads meaning that the total threads that would be visible without tape would be about 1.5 ". I would tighten top first then bottom then back to top until you get about 5" bend in the middle.
I have been thinking of easing off on the bend in mine as I find I am often suffering too much weather helm and less bend might move the center of effort forward a bit?

Thanks too, Bob...

I have a hard copy of the B&R tuning doc, but not one electronically or PDF. You did us a great service!

Joe -- I set mine up last summer. It's supposed to be 1 percent of the distance from the masthead to the boom (which works out to 4.5-5 inches).

Get some very fine twine to run from masthead to boom (or maybe fishing line?). It will take a while to make sure you get it straight because of all the diagonals, that's the tricky part.

I set mine up with the minimum amount of bend to try and minimize weather helm. I had never sailed it before I bought it, so unfortunately I can't tell if it helped or not.
