Hello, When I do a mast raising it takes three people. The other day, I saw from a distance, someone raising the mast by himself. It looked like he was using the job winch. Can anyone elaborate for me as to how this is done??? It would be great not to need all the people at the "hull in" just to raise my mast. Thank you, Dawn Watkins "wat-her logg'd

Use your jib halyard
What I do and a lot of people seem to discuss here is to use the jib halyard. Attach a line to the jib halyard that you can run aft to your winch from the bow. You will still need a person to lift the mast passed parallel so that you can get some mechanical advantage. I have a H20 without a winch. I use the main sheet block attached to the bow and haul it up that way. i usually have the crew in the cockpit walking the mast up whilst I pull in the main sheet, lifting the mast up. Half the time, I raise the mast single-handed by following the instructions that Hunter supplied in the book. I've never had more than one helper and, unless they know what to do, they aren't much help. On the H23.5 it's not necessary to 'walk' the mast up and the Main Sheet provides adequate mechanical advantage to comfortably pull the mast up. Sometimes I do wish the Main Sheet were a couple of feet longer. I've read here on How that some people run the jib halyard to a winch and I've tried but it puts you back in the cockpit when you need to be at the bow pulpit putting the pin in the forestay. Hunter thought the system out pretty well and their directions are not bad. I've raised the mast single-handed with 30mph winds and never had a problem. Take it slow and watch be sure the shrouds aren't kinked and that nothing gets under the hinge foot. I also step the mast while on the trailer..... it's easier to retrieve any dropped hardware. Ive gotten it down to about a twenty minute job, alone. Some hints I would add, get some velcro tie ups to secure the shrouds to the life line it helps to keep them upright. Cleat off the jib halyard on the mast as well as on the cabin top, if it comes loose it can be a long way down. To help me remember to put the mast raising bridle on I keep it attached to the gin pole when stored and when the mast is down I run a red ribbon through the hole to say "attach the bridle you freaking moron" , that is what I thought about myself the day I tried to raise it without the bridle. I will verify that it is a whole bunch easier with them attached.

Hi, Me again, I have the original manual from Hunter for this boat. There is no mention on how to bring the mast up other than, "mast step the mast". So if you are looking for this manual for this information...it is not there. I have read every page. FYI

My 23.5 manual has a full page drawing plus a page of written instructions on how to step the mast. If your manual does not have this, let me know and I will e-mail the info to you or post in the photo forum.
