Just got a '91 26s and it came with a mast raising system that was un-installed. Does anybody know the location on the deck and height up the mast for the temp.side stays?

With reference to misc. cabin leakage (during storage) has anybody simply installed a rear drain and angeled the boat to facilitate the function? I know most are afraid about any below waterline thru-hull stuff, but I have had multiple boats with this solution and encountered no problems. (With this question comes the obvious questions of the integrity of the transom area...thickness, construction etc.)

Welcome! I have a 92 26s. I recently got the mast raising system from Bue Water Yachts and have used it several times. I had previously installed a bail up the mast for the original rope and pulley system at about 7' and it was a little high for the new system. The baby stay padeyes on the deck look factory installed and are a little, maybe 6", in front of the mast step near the lifelines. They are tight when the mast is down and loosen as the mast raises. Because my bail was too high on the mast I had to add extensions to the cable baby stays (used link chains about 12" long for adjsutment).
If I had to do it from scratch I'd hold up the new system you have to the mast. Extend the baby stays directly out from the mast to a position under or near the lifelines. Mark that spot on the mast for the bail (you can drill a 1/4" hole for the bail or if you want to experiment, use a rope or strap to attach) and mark spots on the deck for the pad eyes.
sorry I don't have the instructions from my new raiser, don't remember if one came with it. may be available from BWY.
Hope this helps and go sailing and have fun.

mast raising

Hi

I used 1/8" cable (galvanized..aluminum sleeves. not much stress here)from home depot. My stays are only in place when raising/ lowering so they aren't in the way when sailing. I D-shackle them to the shroud plate aft and installed a tab at the stantion base. Use some trig(and you thought you would never use trig:) ) to determine lengths of baby stays. I attached mine at my spinnaker pole uphaul....7-8 feet maybe? I raise the mast, disconnect all the tripping hazards, and away we go!

Noting your deck attachment points and the fixed system (usin' all that hi-falutten math) I was wonderin' if a traveling pully would not work better here...sorta' keepin' the stress on the system focused on the particular stage of lift in an "adjustable way" till the mast reached it's full height (with the baby straps then directly adjacient to the pivit point on the mast) What do ya' think?

I have seen a couple of solutions. For an approximate location they should be located about 5" in front of the mast base as close to the side of the boat you can get. Mine are attached to the same attachment point on the mast as the lifting cable, about 7'.
Another solution is to attach your stays when the mast is up and strike an arch to the side of the boat and in approx the same area described above. Then lower you mass and with the pencil in the same location on the baby stay strike another arc when the mast is down. Where the two arcs intersect you will have a location where the baby stays are the same length when the mast is up, down and in between.
My favorite solution is to attach an light chain from the base of the stanchions that are in front of and aft of the mast base. adjust the chain so that the point that lines up exactly with the tabernacle pivot point is the same height as the tabernacle. With that as your baby stay attachment point you can make it as snug as you wish. That is the solution that is the simplest and makes the most sense. When the chains are removed you have not deck eyes to trip over or leaks to worry about.

I just took a look at Flinfols and it is the same idea.

Thanks fer' the input and time...will work it out utilizing the two point deck attachment system...more strength and no holes/clutter!

Hi All,

I have two stays that go up to the mast, and two that go forward to hold my gin pole(spinnaker pole) centered. they pivot on that little loop I made on my bridles. Length and tension are not super critical. You just want it to raise somewhat under control. As the mast nears vertical, the shrouds will take over. Have fun...good luck. I'm not sure a traveler would work on the bridle because it needs to be fixed to keep things fixed along the centerline.

How do I see pix of what you are describing? Just bot a 92 26s and have put the mast up and found it a real strain trying to keep it centered. My boat didn't come with optional mast raising kit so I will have to rig my own.
