This is an example where cocktails and computers do not mix. I kept hitting the "start Over" button instead of submit I guess I forgot to paste the web site in the text box before I finalyy hit the correct button. Here it is again just in case.http://www.sailboatmasts.com/Got you all interested though didn't I?
I have raised and lowered the mast on my 26 many times with the pole and small side stay sytem Hunter provided with the boat. This looks as easy as the system in the web site and is a lot cheaper.
Hunter’s mast raising "system" for the 23 consisted of a veiled admonishment to "be strong". No poll, lifts, gadgets or gizmos. Muscle, balance, courage and more muscle are our factory supplied tools.
Boy, would this cut down on forum articles if it works. I'll have to say that I had a Southcoast 22 like the one they're demoing on and I could raise it by myself without any gizmos. Show me on a real buster like the 23.
This guy lives about 60 miles away. I'll call him tomorrow and see if I can get him to come look at my 88' 23. Maybe we can get him on-line for a question/answer post.
I called Bill Alexander this morning. He’s the “The One Man Mast Hoisting Crane” guy. It's not a company, he just builds these things in his workshop. Here’s what I got- He has 2 sizes of crane available for the same price. The larger one seems to be better suited to the 23. He’s built these cranes for boats up to 28 feet. The crane is constructed from 100% steel. Pressure on the hatch area does not exceed 200 lbs. He claims no lateral mast deflection with his system. In my case this is good. There are no more mast foot casting available for my particular 88’ Z-Spar. He also states that his crane is solid and stable enough to partially raise the mast and stop for any period of time and hold the mast vertical with out stays. He has had no complaints to date.If you’re interested, give him a call 972-264-0572. Because of the price (basically $400.00) I’ve got a mandatory 5-day “think about it” period before can I buy. But right now, a one-man mast hoist sounds pretty good.
Thanks to Dave Condon and some of my own inventiveness(couldn't spell inginuity), I have been raising my mast singlehandly for four years. I have the details and equipment list saved in my files if anyone is interested. E-mail me at snark11@aol.com and I will send the information. Keith Smoot S/V Gwaihir
I made a simple "A" frame support with 2x4 lumber and hinges. It attaches quickly to my forward stanchion bases and makes for one handed raising and lowering of the mast. My 23 lives on the trailor when not on the water for weekends. I am ussualy single hand, but I could not raise the mast by myself so this has been a neccessary thing for me. With it, I can be from trailer to underway in 45 minutes. After all the postings on this topic, I have intended to get a picture of my rig to share but have not done so yet. I would be happy to share the idea with anyone interested... I will try get a pic in the next few weeks as I start the season. a_sound@hotmail.com
