I am trying to find information about the mast raising device that was available for the ODay 23(1980). The device is used to raise the mast up from the bow using the boom for leverage. My boat has two pad eyes mounted on the side deck just forward of where the jib winches are located on the cockpit coming. I assume these are there for use during mast raising, but I have never used them, and don't have any instructions/manuals. What other things are needed, and how are the used? Thanks for any help.

Check the archives for mast raising devices

You'll find the discussion has centered more on the 25 foot boats than the 23's, but its still relevant. Read the posts even if they're aimed at Catalinas because the methods are substantially similar. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

To the Yahoo, club for O'Days. Join the group, and you will have access to the photos section. In there is pictures and diagrams of the mast raising device you described. I don't think those pad eyes you described are for the mast assist. They sound more like jib sheet, block, attachment eyes. If you had the device you would have a triangular plate on port and starboard shrouds, even with the boom gooseneck. You could make this mast raising device, however there are other ways to assist the mast, as evidence in the archives. Don
