How practical is it to lower / raise the mast to go under a canal bridge with a Oday 23? Is there another Oday that would fit the bill better for this situation?

Not vary

It can be done...I have a 22 and have lowered and raised the mast a couple of times while the boat was tied to my dock...but...it's much more difficult than when the boat is on a trailer...simple matter of stability. rick/Solace/O-22

ON THE CANAL

RELATIVELY SIMPLE FOR TWO PEOPLE. REMOVE THE BOOM. DISCONNECT THE HEAD STAY. FASTEN THE MAIN SHEET TO THE STEM AND THEAD STAY. PULL THE FORWARD PIN FROM THE MAST STEP AND LOWER AWAY. BE SURE TO HAVE A STRONG PERSON IN THE COCKPIT TO CATCH THE LOWERED MAST. DISCONNECT THE AFT PIN FROM THE MAST STEP AND WALK THE HORIZONTAL MAST FORWARD. MAKE IT FAST TO YOUR BOW AND STERN PULPIT AND PROCEED ON THE CANAL UNDER POWER. IT'S A LOT EASIER WITH THREE PEOPLE BUT TWO CAN DO IT. I ALSO PLACE A COUPLE OF BOAT PILLOWS ON THE CABIN TOP TO HELP SUPORT THE MAST.
