I am noticing some compressing of mast post. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what to do about it? Thanks Ken

B30 Mast Post Settling
Hi Ken, I have this problem. I've an 84 B30. The mast post has pressed into the floor such that head door wouldn't lock when closed due to mis-alignment of the latch. I've done some things so as to not make it worse. First, i keep the rig a little loose. I've added an adustable backstay which is slackened after every sail. I also keep the bilge bone dry. I've marked where the top of the head door closes on the starboard side of the door frame and it hasn't changed in nine months. But i'm still interested what major surgury is required to fix it. I've read one article where cement was squirted into the void under the post. One other removed the mast and post and installed a bigger post. Maybe a combination of a bigger post and new foundation is what's needed. I'd be interested in anything you come across. Paul Santa Cruz, CA

Mast post footing
When I was refitting Bietzpadlin, Islander 30 sail #25 I removed the plywood cabin sole and found a rough cut block of douglas fir with one bronze ring shank nail holding it to the plywood and this was supposed to support the mast column. IT DIDN'T WORK !!!! I replaced it with a locust block well bedded on the keel and a 2X8 black walnut plank bearing on the locust block and both sides of the hull fastened to the locust with bronze drifts. The walnut was stepped to support the new cabin sole and the rotting base of the column was cutoff to leave the column a quarter inch too long for the space. With the help of a small jack I sprung the cabin top enough to set the column into place.
