Mast mounted radar

Hey folks,I currently have a little JRC 1000 radar mounted to a dedicated tower at the rear of my Vega. I'm looking at mounting a wind generator atop this tower, and thus am considering my options for relocating the radar dome. Option 1: Mast mount radar dome. Are there many Vegas with this? Does it significantly affect the jib while tacking?Option 2: Mount the radar slightly lower/offset on the tower.Option 3: Fabricate a mount for my dual backstays (unlikely I'll pursue this option).Thoughts? I need to drop my mast anyway to repair some corrosion on the base, install an anchor light/antennae and check all the rigging. But of course the rear tower mount is simplest, cheapest and most aligned with KISS ideologies. Currently, the base of the radar atop the tower is about 101" above deck. Given the current layout of the radar tower and the triangulation tube, I'd be able to lower the radar without losing much height above deck.I'm going to upload a photo of the current radar tower setup to illustrate what I'm working with.Regards,JacobVega #169

I dont have one, but wouldnt performance be better in front of the mast and stuff?"wisdomracing@... [AlbinVega]" AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com wrote:

My RADAR is mast mounted. In my limited experience, it doesn\'t affect jib tacking (130% genoa). Not the best place for maintenance !  I\'ll try to post a picture.Jean-François AV 703Le 5 janv. 2016 à 21:59, groundhogyh groundhogyh@... [AlbinVega] <AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com> a écrit :

Do you have a tall enough tower that lowering the radome wouldn't end up microwaving anyone on the foredeck?

Thanks for the info guys, glad to hear it doesn't affect the jib. Maybe I'll need to start looking for a mast mount.Groundhog - Yes indeed my understanding is that performance is better on the mast.btfag0s - It's tall enough to probably not do anything problematic to an individual. But the possibility was certainly something I considered. After research, I read informed opinions which stated that brief exposure isn't anything to worry about.

Radar beams are focused, or have specific angles. A pole in the stern 8 feet high, or a little higher, is normally high enough that the beam won't hit folks in the cockpit on a boat as small as a Vega (I had one that high on my HR 39 actually). On a mast mount I teach that it should be no more than about 20 to 22 feet high or you can lose the close in hits. But check the vertical beam angle in your specs and do the geometry (simple drawing works).I have always used a pole in the stern as I don't like adding extra weight aloft, but that is just the way I think (after years of racing).Chris BrownI was addicted to the Hokey Poke; but I turned
