I'm considering mounting a radar scanner on the mast of a 36 foot Hunter. Has anyone had bad experiences with a mast mounted scanner such as obstructing the head sail during a tack?

The only time the jib gets hung up on my radar on mast is when very very low or no wind but any other time the 110 jib will tack no problem.

This problem is much more prevalent on boats that carry overlapping headsails. However, I would mount the radar dome on its own mast for multiple other reasons.

Get a radar guard

I have never had a problem with the headsail and my radar but I have a radar guard that allows the sail to slip right aroung the mast mount.

Since I will have to let the mast down to go down the Tenn-Tom, I would mount on a pole if I were to do over. I do have a better range with the mast mount and I can see objects very close to the boat, so either mount is not significantly different.

Petegill, ultimately I'd say it boils down to dealer's choice. There are pluses and minuses for both a mast mount or a stern rail pole mount. You'll get a zot more range with the mast mounted unit as a function of it's height above the water. Unless you've got an open array, I really doubt you'd ever have issues with the jib hanging up on the radome. Not saying it could never happen but I don't recall anyone ever mentioning that they ripped their jib on the radome. Don't forget, the domes are round with smooth sides so I really can't see what might grab the jib. But then again I never say never when it comes to boats.....

I recently installed a mast mount radar and tv antenna on my 386 and have never experienced any head sail fouling. A mast mount is lower cost than a stern pole mount. However, the advantage of a stern pole radar mount is you can install a low cost flood lamp on it, which is what I did on my last sailboat and was very useful.

Have owned multiple boats with mast mount and three with shorter or pole mount, one of them being a Questus. Our current boat has a stern pole and I hate it but the damn thing was Awlgripped around so it is staying there at least for now. If I could easily put it back on the spar I would in a heart beat.

I have never once, in thousands of miles, had the head sail catch on the dome and I am usually running a 150% or 135-140% head sail. Let the sail tack itself across the dome before sheeting in and you should not have issues. If you do like racers often do and rip on the sheets to force the sail across quickly it will catch. Let the leach bring itself over and across the dome and then sheet in..
