Mast lowering

I have a 23 O'day and have always used the tried and manly (but not very smart) method of lowering my mast. Using some strong friends, several six packs for after the mast is down, and some pucker power. I have been reading some methods that some of you use employing the use of a gin pole which I like far better. I was wondering if gin poles are a locally manufactured item. If so, what sort of dimensions are they. I am not sure I understand what you use to support the gin pole for lateral support. Do you leave the shrouds attached to the mast as you are lowering it? Is the mast really strong enough that the gin pole will not kink it? There really has to be quite a bit of pressure at that point. Sorry for all of the questions, I just want to really understand it before under taking it. Thanks for any advice. George

Gin Pole

Joe, Thanks so much for you reply, you really provided me with the info that I was looking for You have made my life much easier. I keep my boat at a dock and what I have been doing when I raise/lower it is to back it into the slip so that the transom is close to the dock and then bolt a 2x8 across the dock poles directly astern of the boat. When the tide is low, I lower the mast onto the 2x8, and then move it on to or off the dock or boat. Using the gin pole will make this operation much safer. Thanks again. George
