Mast light problem

I just purchase a 1984 Hunter 31. Supposedly when the boat was inspected the Anchor lights “top of the mast”worked, but the Running light “mid Mast” did not. I had the boat moved (300 miles) and when re-rigging I replaced the burned out Running light. The connections at the base of the mast were clean and showed no corrosion or wear. The boat has always been in fresh water. Now I do not have any working lights on the mast. Where should I start trouble shooting this problem?

Got a Connector?

Be cautious of "supposedly"; it is not in the same category as "definitely" or "guaranteed" If you have a connector for the wiring, you can start there. Take several measurements as described in numerous threads available here in HOW. With no connector, you could actually take off the power/switch panel under the companionway and make measurements there as well. (Be sure to secure shore power and turn off battery switch first.) If these are not options, climb the mast and reseat the bulbs. Same thing happened to mine when I stepped mast; the bulbs were a "tad" loose and just came unplugged. I have a complete bosun rig if you need to borrow it. Congrats on the new boat!

trouble shooting

Always remember the first law of trouble shooting. Check the simple things first. Second law check the last thing tinkered with. Good luck.
