mast leaking through cabin top

I recently purchased acutter riged 37 Cherubini designed vessel 80 model. 1. The mast is leaking around the deck fitting. I bought a boot but there is no lip to fit it to. Since I am unfamiliar with this boat what can I do to stop the leak around the mast. Is the answer as simple as clean around the mast and load the void with 5200? I can't see where I can attach a boot.. The deck plate has no flange......2. I read about potential rudder problems....what can I do to check and see if my potential rudder problem has been solved. Or is my model one that there was no problem.

Mast Leak. . .

Frank,I don't have a cherubini, but a 37.5 .I had some water leakage inside under the mast when it rained very, very, heavey.In my case the water did not come in around the mast base, but rather it ran down the inside of the mast. It was getting in thru the sheeve openings, and the holes for the cbles and wires etc.I was told there is a drain hole at the base of the mast that allowed the water to run out, and it was probably clogged.I could neverfind the hole.The water would back up and have no place to go it would run down the wires entering the interior and leak at the top of the compression post inside the boat. What I did, rather then seal around the wires giving the water no place to go, I sealed around the top of the post, so the water can't exit at the top but runs down the inside of the post (it is hollow) and into the bilge. There is a groove on the stringer where the bottom of the post is that allows the water to run freely to the bilge, I imagine that is why it is there, so this should be an ok fix.I would ony have a leak in really heavey T- storms.See if this would apply to your problem.Chriss/v Tidsong

5200

Had my mast pull and painted about six months ago on my '81 37 Cutter . It was in the original condition when we pulled it and as far as I can tell Hunter had the interior plate in place then filled everything with 5200, or equivilant at that time, then bolted the top plate in place. Seems to work, it lasted 19 years on my boat without leaking as far as I can tell. Did the same thing when we restepped the mast and hasn't leaked yet. Don,t forget to seal the bolts when you put them in. Good luck Charles S/V Destiny
