We are having a problem with a water leak at the base of our mast. We have used a silicone caulk around the base of the mast step and the base of the mast where it rests on the step. Also, we filled the hole where the wireing comes through the cabin top with silicone caulk. Appreciate any suggestions.

Sealing around the mast base and wiring holes on the mast will make no difference. The traditional problem has been the wiring harness passing through the cabin top. This is the area that needs to be properly sealed. I'm not familiar with how this harness passes through on the 340 but on my 35.5 there is an access panel in the salon ceiling at the mast support pole that can be removed to expose this harness. Chalking all around this hole will prevent water entrance. Failing all that, you can seal up your boat and pump air inside with a shop vac. Spray soapy water around the base of the mast and look for the bubbles.

Hi Skip, had a similar problem on our...

boat when we purchased her a few years ago. The attached link from the Knowledge Base is an article that I wrote describing what I did to fix our leak. Rather than dropping the mast, perhaps you can loosen the rigging and raise the mast off the step a few inches to do what I did. It remains leak free five years later.
