Sleeved-mast issues
Depends on where the sleeve is. The best place is at the spreaders, so their compression loads push against the internal sleeve. I would presume that just below might be worse than just above. There's more side and fore-and-aft loads there. Also, the added weight can be an issue. For my money, welding would be out of the question. The new fault line will be between the weld and the old aluminum. While you are paying for the (custom-fit) sleeve, price a new bare spar and exchange all the hardware. It's not hard and now is the season for that. Rig-Rite and Dwyer/DAMCO carry original Hunter-spec spars (and fittings). They both put prices on the web sites. I don't know what a new mast for my H-25 costs, but a replacement complete boom assembly from DAMCO is +/- $400. That's almost a no-brainer (I'm considering it even though I can fix the old one).JC
