I am looking at a 1978 Hunter 27_75-84 that its owner hit a bridge with the mast. The forestay was snapped and the mast has a bend starting above the spreaders. At the top it looks to be a bend of 3 to 4 feet. Hard to tell from the ground. The boat was seized for unpaid moorages. The price is $5,000.00 is this a good price? Can the mast be re bent, or do I need to get a new mast. One rigging shop gave me a quote of $7,000.00 for the repairs.

If the rest of the boat is in good shape sounds like a good deal. You would need a new mast/used mast and forestay. If you do it yourself with a used mast should keep the price under 1000 dollars. I payed 3000 for a 25 of this age which was a great deal, so you end up with 6000 dollars total for the boat. Again the condition of the rest of the boat and equipment is the key.

for a boat looking at a minimum repair job of around $4,000. The listing prices for these 1978 models vary between $4,000 and $8,000 on the average, depending on equipment and condition. Check the ones listed on the Boat Info section and you will find a 1978 model listed for $6,900 which looks pretty clean and has a dodger and other extras. I would not offer your seller more than $2,500 for that boat even if everything else was in good working order. If you are searching for a boat look also outside your area; you may find a good deal in California plus the opportunity of an adventure in sailing it home.

great if you can repair it cheap but if you have to purchase a new mast or pay the 7k estimate not such a good deal. Unless you can purchase a new or used mast you will be hurt in resale if the mast repair is noticeable (bet it will especially if boat goes thru a survey) so you may want to keep that in mind as sometime you will need to sell it. I'm guessing the owner walked away from it because it was more to repair then he felt the boat was worth or the insurance company declared the boat a total loss. (if there was insurance) Have you checked into getting a used mast cost? I'm thinking that you could do better either price wise on the boat or just buy another boat. All of the above assumes there are no other problems with the boat,have you checked everything else ? My guess is that the boat with the bent mast will be for sale quite a while at the 5 k price. Real answer is what can you buy and repair it for ? That price will determine the "deal or no deal"

If I can get the boat for $2,500 as Benny said that would but the perches and repairs at $ 9,500. I have not seen the inside of the boat yet. Hoping to get a good look at it today. Still thinking about just unbending the mast. There is no crease in the tube.

First off, $7000 is close to what the boat is worth if it were in moderately good shape. ($8000-$9000 seems to be the average price for a good 1978 H27 around here) The other folks comments about finding a used mast and doing it yourself is sound advice IF you can find one and IF there isn't other damage you haven't noticed like chainplates, etc. Of course the forestay would need replacing. If you aren't adept at rigging you would need to hire a rigger after the replacement mast is installed. I definantly wouldn't pay $5000. Frankly, I would walk away from this one.
