I want to add a windex to the top of my mast and was wondering about the size and type I should get. Also looking for the best deal. Is the model 10 too small? Or is the 15 too large? I've looked at West Marine, wondered if there was another source/better price. Thanks Mark Mac25

try DATAMARINE

When I bought my 25 it came with a datamarine masthead unit for wind direction and speed. At the time, the fin was missing from the vane. I had no idea how old the unit was or who made it. I found a model number on it and some info for what turned out to be an older company which they had absorbed. I contacted datamarine and was able to purchase what I needed to repair my unit. I later broke the masthead unit's wind cups through an act of my own stupidity. Again, I was able to get what I needed from them. I have had great service from datamarine and really like the unit that I have. It has one guage mounted next to the companionway with a toggle switch to select between windspeed and wind direction. I generally leave it set for speed and just look to the masthead to read direction. Admittedly, I've done no research into other units but am satisfied with what I have. Try this link or a google search for them. I think you'll be happy. http://www.maritech.com/

10

I have a "windex 10 sport" for my 21 and it's the perfect size. I think the 15 is for sure too big. Go in to a marine store and look at the two side by side, you'll see what I mean. Unless you're really nearsighted, I think the 10 is the better option. The good thing about the 10 is that it's easy to take it apart for when you trailer the boat.

If you go to look at them, pace off about 25 feet and look at it. That will be what you see from the cockpit. I see same windex's "flags" set 90 degrees apart (45 + 45 no-go zone) but I find that I can get closer to the wind than that. Mine are set closer together. I couldn't tell you at what angle though.

Ok, I'll order the 10, its cheaper too! Thanks for all the input. Mark

When trailering -- windex on or off?

Just bought a 10. Is this something that should be taken off when trailering?

If you only bought one, then take it off.

It might take highway speed winds in its normal position, but not with the mast laying down.
