Mast head light?

Hey Ross, help me out. Why do you say anchor light should be "closer to the boat" All of the boats I am familiar with here in Great Lakes have anchor light at top of mast and steaming light somewhere just above the first spreader. I am talking production boats here, Catalina, Hunter, O'Day, Bennys, etc. Thanks in advance for the info. Fair winds Dave

Anchor and steaming light

Your anchor light needs to be a 360 degree light, and the steaming light should be a 180 degree, visible from the beam forward. If you mount the steaming light on top of the mast where would you put the anchor light, and make it visible for 360 degrees.

Hunter solved this with two bulbs..

..in same place, with two separete lines. Each of them has 180 degrees, one to forward, the other one to stern. When you switch on the STEAMING LIGHT,only the front one comes on. And when the ANCHOR LÝGHT on,both come on, so you have 360 degrees.

I have same as Ersin two bulb one bulb for steaming and one for anchoring and mine is 2007 36 hunter. Hunter added a steaming light above the spreaders on larger boats. Nick

Every boat I have seen

has the anchor - 360 on the mast head. the steaming light is around the spreader. I took down about a dozen masts last fall and getting the mast sling over the steaming light is always a concern.

I am wrong about the steaming light. That goes on the mast

about at the spreaders. There can be a tri-color at the masthead. but I still hold that the anchor light should be closer to the deck. I don't recall the source of this copy and paste but I thought it significant. I often see low lying stars that don't move all night and realize that there is a boat under them. Copy and paste: Vessels at anchor must show an anchor light unless located in a special anchorage area designated by the Secretary of Transportation. For vessels less than 50 meters in length, the light should be an all-round white light visible for two miles. It should be located where it may best be seen. Many sailboats have masthead anchor lights. It must be kept in mind that these are located well above the line of sight of many small coastal vessels likely to be encountered at night. A safer alternative is a light hung at the lowest height from which it can be seen in all directions. Vessels less than 7 meters in length are not required to display anchor lights when anchored in an area clear of vessel traffic. Shapes
