I do not have a mast head light on my H23 mast. I have the anchor light at the top of the mast, but not the mast head light for when you are under power at night. My question is: Do all H23's come without this light? What have others done about it? If I do this, I would like to combine the mast head light and a deck light. Has anyone else done this, and do you have any suggestions or advice . Thanks, Bill Leathen - KUKANA III on Lake Onalaska

Mast head or anchor light

Hi Bill - On my H23, I have exactly the opposite condition - maddening, isn't it? Mine is an '86 with the Kenyon mast. Check out the archives - lots of discussion on this over the years.

Steaming light

Caution on "combining a deck light and steaming light. Your deck light (usually a spreader light or pair of spreader lights) will not comply with the rules of the road for the nighting steaming (underway under power) light that shines forward through an arc of 225 degrees. My (just purchased) 1985 H23, with Kenyon mast, has both a steaming light (225-degree) and a mast top anchor light (360-degree), but neither work, so I have a project on the list to step the mast and check bulbs and wiring throughout.

Are you sure you need to unstep the mast?

I think it would be prudent to go up in a chair and replace the bulb, before going through the effort to unstep the mast. My guess is it is the bulbs.

The masthead light is a common problem on the H23. I've found the problem is commonly the wiring or plug. I've replaced the deck plug on mine but still have to clean or wiggle it once in a while. Also...the Kenyon mast has a steaming light which shines forward as well as a masthead anchor light shining 360. The Z spar, which I have, has only the masthead anchor light and no steaming light. I suppose they intend you to motor with the masthead light on.

Just to chime in...mine is an 86 with the kenyon mast...it has only the steaming light and it doesnt work either, the wires do not look to be marine grade...no sign of tining.

Bad Connection?

I have been a tech for many years. To combat the bad connection problem use steel wool to clean the contacts. Then stop by at an auto store and buy a can of pase-like material that is used to coat the inside of the car spark plug wire caps to keep moisture out. It is about $ 3.00 for a 4oz can. This will solve the problem
