I remember seeing a bird deterrent that looked like a bunch of fine stainless wires protruding from a base. Kinda like an umbrella. Spanning 3 to 4 feet. I would like to find one but no longer see them in magazines. One company has one they call "daddy long legs". This might work for gulls but swallows will just use them for additional parking. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Bird season is approaching again! Drat those poopers!

Make your own!

Ron: You can make something like this yourself. Get a piece of plastic and drill some holes in it. Then either place some nails or wires through it. Mount it to the top of the mast with some silicone or sealant that can be removed when you need to redo it. Birds will roost on our neighbors boat. If you make one for everyone in the marina maybe they will roost on the telephone wires again.

Spiked Deterrent

I was helping a friend rig his mast last week. He had stainless razor wire at the masthead, and four spikes on each spreader. I have no idea where the product can from, but I did dig out this website.

Call Coneys

When I bought my boat, Coneys offered me bird-x -- I thought it was like undercoating for the car -- but I haven't had a bird problem since i own the boat -- www.coneys.com

birds on lifeline?

i can see the spikes would work pretty good on the spreader. I certainly wouldn't want those spikes up my rear. But what about the lifelines? they are the perfect perch for a bird making my gunnels a mess. by the way, anybody have a way to chase spiders off the boat other that nasty spider kill chemicals? i think the green spider piss is worse than bird poop.

Flea collars!

Jim: Flea collars seem to work. I get the largest one I can find and cut off pieces that I attach (use some wire) around the stanchions/pulpits. They last for a couple of months and then you need to replace them. During the winter I use Pest Strips in my sail covers. They seem to help. I do not know that anything is completely effective other the smashing the little SOB's.
