Looking for vang bracket for my 1999 Hunter 260. Mast has two 1/4" nuts imbedded in mast track. Can't find on hunter owners web page. Any thoughts?

I'd call the store from this site and ask them. They have gotten me parts for my 240 before that weren't listed on the website.

Vang

The vang attaches to the mast hinge pin. There is a plate that is bent around the pin with two ears and a hole for a shackle to attach. When you put the pin in the mast base for raising, you center the vang attachment and put the pin in. I'll try to get a better picture tomorrow.

If push comes to worse, you can get the vang attachment pin from U.S. Spars as it is the same as if coming from Z Spar who originally supplied the masts for the 26 to Hunter.

thank you for the photo. The original was a Z Mast part but often difficult to install with the pin when attaching the mast to mast base.

It was replaced with a much easier "vang hinge" which is u shaped vs. the old style. It is designed for a 5/16 inch hinge vs. the 1/4 inch pin but makes it easier to install as well. You can see this hinge on www.usspars.com under online cataloge for mast Z145 part k#541.

You can order the new vang hinge from this site store or Hunterowners parts and the reference is 800386 which is in stock at this time./

Due to the weight of the mast aft of the crutch and the need to "wiggle" the mast to get the pin through I find it too awkward to also try to install any kind of vang hinge while attaching the mast.

I have been searching for a good solution (if there is any) to attach the vang to that pin after the mast is pinned and up. Or maybe fashion something that attaches across the fitting screwed to the deck (is that called the mast tabernacle?) using the holes along either side. The space between the pin and mast (or pin and deck plate) is too narrow to slide any shackle I have found through the slot.

Does anyone have a solution they like?

Take a short length of thin dyneema and loop it around that pin and your hand several times, making a loop maybe 3 inches across. Tie the two ends together securely, using knots what will not slip.

You now have soft shackle that you can attach the vang to. It will not stretch and is strong enough to lift your boat.

kDave;

Thank you for the attachment link to that part. Please note in an earlier email I mentioned that.

In another note, the mast mfg. you were looking for, look up Charleston Spar or Sparcraft to see if any of the mast shapes are identical. Just a suggestion sir.
