I am wondering if there is any online pictoral referance for dropping the mast and trailering a C22 for new owners. I am helping some friends do this on their boat, and I've done it before on other boats, but I would love to have any Catalina-specific tidbits of info as well as any tips and tricks they could take along with them to make it easier for them in the future without me there.

From the Archives

Cleetus: Please check the Archives for what you are looking for. There was an article entitled "Catalina 22 Mast Raising System" that I think covered this issue, begining 9/27/2003. I uploaded some photos too. Or, just click on the attached link, and read the responses. Aldo

All deck stepped mast.

1. mast crutch a must. 2. once the mast is above 30 degrees angle pulling at the top is easy for a female or young teenager. Attach a 100 foot rope to the jib halyard and have one them pull the top of the mast from the ground in front of the tow vehicle, You must lift the mast from the stern the first 30 degrees first. 3. watch for the attached stays for hooking something on deck and binding at their bases in the first 30 degrees of lift. Last 30 degrees watch the backstay.

Mast Raising on Trailer

Does the technique described below work with a furled jib ??

Use a block an tackle

I use a small block and tackle. You can get one at http://www.northerntool.com I connect one end to a carbiner on the bow eye, and the other end to the jib halyard, which is cleated to the mast. One person holds the mast steady from the cockpit, while another person takes in the block and tackle. The backstay, upper shrouds, and rear lower shrouds are all connected before starting. Once raised, tie off the block and tackle, and conect the forward lower shrouds, and the forestay. I have a 150 furled genoa that stays connected, just keep it under control so that it doesn't catch on anything while raising the mast. A mast crutch is a must have piece of equipment.

use main sheet

I use use my main sheet blocks and line attached to the jib halyard and bow to pull the mast up after its placed in a mast crutch. I always make sure the line is pulled thru the cam cleat. That way the mast wont fall if something happens. You can also stop any time to release stays or shouds that hang up. I use quick release pins from "Catalina Direct" p/n z2053 @ $3.49ea. so I dont have to retune rig each time

Furler

Furler;cause of weight, must have an additional person just to keep it from draging and scratching deck. Short handed boaters the gin pole is the way to go.

Mast stepping

Hello Cleetus: With 2 people, no need for any raising gear! A crutch is a life saver. I walk my mast aft, lift it into the crutch, put the pin in the mast hinge, stand in the cockpit, lift the mast & walk onto the cabin top. The backstay, aft & top shrouds are connected but loose. My helper has a line clipped to the forestay & pulls the mast up. Once the mast is about 40 degrees up, it is all his & I just watch for shrouds catching on the enclosure buttons. Only time I use my home made gin pole is when I am alone. Are toggles on the lower aft shroud turnbuckles standard equipment? I don't have them so have to turn the chainplate tangs to align with the mast & the tension. For lowering/raising the mast, they have to be parallel with the boat center line. When tensioned they must be at right angles to the mast. Regards, Bob B.
