Mast disaster

We had some nasty storms today in New York and the mast on my Hunter 22 broke off. It appears that the plate that holds the mast to the top of the cabin cracked and splintered into three or four pieces - still not sure of the condition of the rest of the rigging we were just trying to get the mast, the boom and the furling jib out of the water and secure it to the deck. Any advise on the best way to proceed: New mast? New plate? Are there rigging experts that can evaluate the damage while the boat is still moored or does it have to come out of the water. This is only the second year of boat ownership and there's still a lot to learn. Thanks

Contact your insurance company and see what they are going to do for you first.

If the insurance company isn't an option, then you'll have to assess the damage. If the mast didn't get bent and the spreaders aren't bent, you'll probably only need a new plate for the cabin top. I replaced the one on my Catalina 22 once; fortunately I didn't suffer mast problems first. I'd imagine your stainless shrouds, backstay, forestay, and turnbuckles are fine. The roller furler may have something kinked and will need a close inspection, but it will either work or not. You'll find out right away when you test it.

Thanks for the response - insurance is not an option. Further investigation shows mast is cracked and will have to be replaced. Any suggestions on where to look?
