Dude,

slap the mast on a chop saw with a carbide tipped blade and use wax or spray silicone. Cut 3/4 of an inch. Rivet it on the step plate and tighten your stays. Then go sailing.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies. I feel a lot better. I was litteraly looking up junk yards that take boats.
A couple of things. I am definitely getting all new stays all around. I think these are original. Drmarine has them for 560 for my boat.
I have the Oday 19 and not the mariner/Rhodes/192

Thanks for the advice on the clean up. Definitely on the list.

The spreaders - are they supposed to have a lot of play in them or be ridged? They seem to flop around.

Ok the mast. So reading everyone's reply. It seems like if I can get it welded then that is the first choice. Cutting and getting the Catalina shim kit is second and all else fails just drill new holes in a different place.

I have a guy that welds aluminum and will be giving him a call.
I do have a riveter (if that is what you call it...) but it seems even after welding I should drill holes in different spots because the holes in the plug might be too big?

This is awesome. I really wanted to keep the boat. Fits my family perfect. I like working on it - half the fun.

Much appreciated!!!

I am not sure why there are pop rivets there at all. My boat does not have them. The mast just rests atop the base. ....
It is a trailer sailboat... so the mast pivots and that base is essentially half of the hinge.

The spreaders may have some play in them. The tension on the rig should keep them in place and tight. Check around the internet for tuning advice and proper tension.

Try Rigging Only (http://www.riggingandhardware.com) down the road in Fairhaven MA. They made intermediate and lower shrouds for my 36' boat for less money than Dr. Marine quoted you for your 19' boat. Take the old rigging to them and ask them to copy it. They do good work and do inexpensively using good quality materials.

If the welder can fill the holes in the mast, he can probably fill the holes in the mast step. Take the whole thing to him and ask. It might be a good idea to remove the step from the tabernacle and clean it up.

As a former dealer who dealt with the ODay 19, first check to see if you have any play in the turnbuckles. If so, you could cut off 1/2 to 1 inch and that would not do anything to the boat only if you have room to adjust the turnbuckles. If not, I would redrill and pop rivet. You wouold be fine to do that.

The mast is repairable by basically shortening it and adding a spacer as needed under the mast step.

Any boat will require maintenance – even a brand new one. The O'Day is a nice simple and trailerable boat. I use mine when I want sail in other locations other than the Boston Harbor Islands area. Mine is hull number 453 built in model year 1983. The time and repairs I have done have been worth it to me. As I mentioned to you before, focus on the structural and operational items first.

If you sailed the other weekend and had no other issues, the mast and tiller repairs should not be a show-stopper .

My O'Day 19 had its mast fall sometime before I got it. Its mast shoe was welded back on and the shrouds were relocated further out and had unusual extensions to the shrouds. I reworked the poorly repaired deck so the shrouds could go back to their original position.

Focus on cleaning up an repairing the mast. Replace all of the standing rigging if any one piece is frayed. Rudy at D&R Marine has reasonable pricing and has the right parts.

I replaced my smaller straight tiller with a more robust curved one just like on my Capri 22. It felt much more under control after the change.

The O'Day 19 came two versions:
• MK I "Tall Mast" 1978 to 1980-1/2
• MK II "Regular Mast" 1980-1/2 to 1985

I am trying to determine if I need to cut my losses, admit I am just another guy that bought a boat that needs too much work/money to make it sea worthy or if it is viable to restore.
Brett,

In case you think your O'Day might be way too gone to restore, here is an example of how much can be done.

Take a look at these videos from Boatworks Today (www.BoatworksToday.com). This is someone who is a professional and in these videos has taken possession of a Rhodes 19 in dubious condition. He is going to restore it for his own, not a customer.

lol look at these pics of my boat before and after
If one is handy with tools, willing to learn, and has time, then most any boat is worth restoring.
If all one is interested in is sailing, then the boat can be a great bargain for people like me.

Yesterday, I started to work on a Ranger 29 that the previous owner had taken the insides apart for restoration but died (he was a wood worker). It will be a 2-year project mostly because my wife wants the house addition done first.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement! I am sticking with the boat and fix everything on it. When I bought it I had the goal of learning to sail and learning to repair/maintain. So I am having the attitude that this is a great opportunity to learn.

I talked to my welder. He said that welding the mast where it is corroded is a pain. I am going to weld up the holes in the plug and cut 1/2 inch off the mast and drill new holes.

I am getting new stays all around. Seems like the smart thing to do. Not sure if I should order the stays shortened or raise up the mast step with the Catalina kit. My gut is to keep the original height of the mast if I can but I have no experience with any of this.

Ordering up the curved tiller - at this point what is another 75 bucks. Looking at why the motor as no spark and winter project of repairing the centerboard (it is cracked).
Oh yea and my main has 5 patches on it and needs another patch - found a rip in it. I guess I need to learn to sew - I bought the diddy bag book and a kit from sailrite. Hopefully does the trick for a back up main but I obviously need a new one.

I love the inspiration. Hopefully next year I can sail it a ton.

I will keep everyone updated on the progress

Thanks again.

Check your root cause: Why the forestay let loose? Did it break or your turnbukle gave way or you didn't pin it.

The mast base although some corrosion isn't your problem. It can be welded back. The rivets are there to hold the bottom piece in place, not for load carrying. The mast compress down due to the tension from the rigging.

Quick update from last year. Finally working on this issue. I can't use the Catalina 22 block to raise the tabernacle. It is too narrow so I am going to cut and order shortened stays - I need them anyway.

My next question is my mast step casting. It has holes it it that look like they are worn out and too large. See pic.

Drmarine doesn't seem to have a replacement although I am going to call. They have one for,the 192 but not sure if that will fit.

Am I ok with mine or is it smoked and I need a new one?

Thanks!

It's fine. the holes are only there for the rivets that hold it on when the mast is down.
Use bigger rivets or ignore those and drill new ones.

A skilled welder might be able to fill the holes with aluminum. Then drill new holes.

Brett..It looks old and crusty, but looks like it will still do the job. You can make it pretty. Take it to a local machine shop that also does coating. You can have it cleaned up then powder coated. It will look new. Did that to my mast step last year.

Thanks for the replies. I called drmarine. They had one- 22 bucks.

Now on to cutting.
I assume I don't need to get fancy. A sharp hack saw and a cutters block will cut it straight?

This is the part that makes me nervous.
