I built the following system and it works fairly well. I have a telescoping support that sits in the cockpit near the cockpit drain. I don't use the telescoping part because currently I can muscle the mast up from its down position. The cockpit structure (which is 5 feet tall from base to the roller at the top) is secured using rope at four connection points: The two stern side cleats, the cleat where the pendant to the centerboard is secured, and the gudgeon that receives the pintle for the rudder. The support is made of steel channel iron which makes it a bit heavy but it is stable. The base is attached to starboard material that is countersunk so that the boltheads don't damage the cockpit. I also chalked the ends to make sure they don't rub metal against fiberglass. There is a small lip on the vertical starboard piece that is pulled tight in the channel where the cockpit drain is located. Once secured, it doesn't move. The height is 5 feet from the base to the rollers. At the bow, I used starboard material and created a support that attaches to the pulpit. It attaches with u-bolts and wingnuts. I line it with pipewrap before securing the mast at the bow. All in all, this works fairly well although the mast is not horizontal. Rather, it angles toward the bow. If I had to do it over again, I would probably make the cockpit structure out of lighter steel. Otherwise, I'm happy with how it works.
