I need to build a mast crutch for my Hunter 23. Is it necessary that it fit into the rudder pins or can it stand against the transom?

mast crutch

I think you could fabricate a mast crutch that did not sit on the pins . It would probably straddle the transom in some fashion . You would also need it built so as not to move sideways . Is this something that you want to use to move the boat or just for storage purposes ? Mike

I wish i had a picture

ok. First note is that i have a railing on my stern. My crutch is 2 2x4's in an X, with the boat ends sitting on the cockpit seats. I cut the coners to fit snugly in the corner between the cockpit seat and the coaming. At the top of the X, is a big bolt with a rubber bow roller on it. This lets me roll the mast back and forth, but holds it side-to-side. when the mast is down on the boat, i roll it forward until the gooseneck is on top of the bow railing, this does a great job of keeping it from going forward-back. I lash it to the bow roller at the back, tie it to the bow cleat up front, and i put a short bucket over the mast step and tie a rachet strap over it

New Crutch

I had a new one built, and used the pins. On thing that helped minimize the "rodeo" that was mast erection, was to make the crutch a (2) position arrangement. The lower position is like the factory unit height. The other allows the mast to be inclined, higher to allow an easier time in setting the mast into the deck plat while clearing the gooseneck and the boom kicker swivel. I tried to build something that would go into the back of the cockpit, and it would work OK if there was a way to anchor it the the transome. In all, the original design works, well with the upper position. Good Luck. BS

For those with rollers

I have one, too. But how do you lock the mast to it when trailering? right now, i do a generous lashing with the jib halyard..but theres got to be a better way.

Mast tie down

If you look at the pictures, the rod with the roller is stored away. The short piece goes into the middle rod with the rope attached. The mast rests in the cradle and the rope is tied off on top of the mast.

Mast Crutch

I have a separate tube that is attached to the transom that the mast crutch slides into. I will take a picture and post it here. brian
