I took a look at the bottom of my mast today and noticed that there was signicant corrosion. The bottom 1/2" is thinned and perforated to about one half its original thickness. This is an Isomat mast on a 1986 O'Day 31. Any suggestions as to how to repair this problem. I believe the mast shoe on the boat fits inside the mast therefore you can not add any reinforcement to the inside. Help!!

Is it corrosion or electrolosis?

It sounds like electrolosis. What is the mast base made out of? I would check the electical potential between the two.

Cut mast, move base up 1/2"

Metal mast in Portland CT can fabricate a new base if necessary. But for the relatively small amount of material removed you could place a sheet of Starboard, or pvc or fiberglass under the step to make up the difference. If your mast step is anything other than aluminum you need to isolate it electrically so the corrosion doesn't come back. UHMW tape works as does epoxy or even duct tape. hope this helps, Al M
