Has anyone had experience with small amounts of deterioration where the mast sits on the mast support bracket on the keel. Dropped my mast and discovered some of the aluminum has deteriorated away on one side. Previous owner had riveted a collar around mast butt to correct this. Any ideas with future deterioration prevention/cure?

cause of corrosion

The corrosion likely occured due to excess water in the bilge, keeping the mast base wet. Maybe a one time flooding event occured, check wood and other areas for possible flooding. Also, use a multimeter, switched to continutity check, to test the mast-to-ground connection. The Mast should be connected to the boats grounding plain that is protected by the zinc balls on the prop. I would go through the whole boat and test the grounding plain. I've seen situations where the grounding wire broke in the bildge, thus leaving the items forward of the break unprotected. Chris
