A boat at my club recently lost its mast. The mast failed at the top end of the internal sleeve that was used to join the two pieces. In engineering terms, this creates a "stress riser". It is not as strong as a single piece of mast. There are lots of used boats on the market and replacement mast are expensive....

A careful look at cellphone towers and traffic signal

spars will show that all of these are made in multiple pieces. Usually they are tapered and shipped with the smallest piece inside the next and so on. In the field they are assembled. When you push the engineering envelope you must be prepared for failures. If you deliberately pull a mast out of column then you must be prepared to accept a mast failure. A column will cripple when pulled out of column long before the vertical loads will cause failure in a straight column. The shrouds and stays are the vertical load on a mast

Splice

I have a 2000 H340 with a B&R rigged Selden mast that came from the factory with a splice about 1/3 of the way up the mast. The mast is 50' long with double spreaders and has diamond rigged shrouds.
