On checking my beam this evening, and taking some photos and measurements, I discover my beam is actually 4" thick: 1 1/2" mahogany sandwiching the original spacer and another 1/2" plywood filler. Yikes ... no wonder I have lumps on my skull!

Peter,
Having lumps on your skull is much better than being a numskull, which you are definitely not :) I got nosey today and dropped the last hash and word from your link and got to peek at all you pictures. You've got some great shots hidden in there. How do you like you wind vane? Does the paddle in the water act as a rudder and steer the boat or do you have to run lines to the tiller? I've been seriously thinking about the Hydrovane so that I have a secondary rudder and don't have to run lines to my tiller. It's far enough down on my project list I don't have to worry about it yet unless I find a used one. I would be interested in anyone's experience running a Hydrovane. Thanks

Ric, glad you enjoyed the pictures :)
The Navik doesn't work as a rudder in itself, and there are lines to the tiller. Not familiar with the Hydrovane, but that sounds like a good idea being able to use it as a rudder as well. The vane is a great addition, especially when single-handing, and the Navik is lightweight and has an excelent track record.

There's a bit of video on the Navik in action at

It took me a while to get my head around to how it works ... magic!

Hi All

I have a Neptune Windvane which is the correct weight for a Vega, easy to fit. well built, works well and is not too expensive.

Hi David

Is it possible connect autopilot to Neptun if wind is weak and/or wind is
behind? I mean... then autopilot tell to Neptun winds direction and vindvane
works better. On some models this is possible, how is Neptun?

Hi All

I have had a Navik fitted for nearly 10 years now and an invaluable piece of gear when needed. Not much call for most of my trips in The Solent though

I also have a Hydrovane in the garage and it is a very hefty piece of gear!! reckon it will make the Vega arse heavy! They really are big and heavy. Mine is just to play with and will sell it soon.

Cheers

All,

I have a Navik that is missing a the link arm. Making the arm is simple, but
it takes a couple little fittings that fit (snap) over the two balls to
connect the connector tube. I don't even know what they are called or where
to get them. Any suggestions???

Chris,
See message #15613. There's a link to some photos. Are these the fittings you need, on the ends of the long skinny fiberglass control rod that runs vertically up the tube to the top of the vane?

Also .....
The old Navik parts list has something called a "Ball Link", which I'm guessing is what you want (part# 2-26-52-718)
Unfortunately, I don't think they still supply them :-(

Also, check out this page for "Ball Links":
It has a lot of model aircraft pieces.

Hope this helps!

Hi Steve - Been following the items on self steering, I have two connecting
rods , one with both connectors the other with one. Was thinking of offering
them but no idea of worth etc. I also have various other parts although some
bent.

The fittings in the picture are what I need. These are the ball sockets that
snap onto the fixed ball on the Navik. Is there a source for these? I can't
imagine that they were manufactured specifically for Navik.

I know it's been awhile since I posted on my mast compression troubles, but I finally finished the job (I think) and took some more pictures which you can find in the Photo Section in the album "VegaLyra". Overall, everything feels pretty sturdy now - I'm relying almost exclusively on the steel plate for the actual load bearing of the mast, with the wooden beams acting mostly to sandwich the plate and keep it from twisting. The plate is attached to the bulkhead via shorter woodscrews, Sikaflex glue, and via compression force from the throughbolts that go all the way from the aft cabin beam to the forecabin plank. (All of this came with Steve Birch's kit or was suggested by him).
The roof is still slightly deformed in this seagull shape - I expect it to settle a bit over the summer, hopefully until it rests again on the bulkhead and the beams. The biggest immediate improvement is that I can finally close the forepeak door again - there is even a small gap between it and the beams which is good insurance in case some more settling of everything occurs (see last Photo).
I'll let y'all know if any more problems turn up during this year's sailing season - better go back and fix all the other "little things" now so I can go sailing!
