Brass Wool, SOS pads, and 3M wax
The previous owner of my boat had cleaned the mast using steel wool and SOS pads then waxed it with 3M's restorer/polisher wax. Said it worked great. I've heard since that you are supposed to use steel wool as pieces of it can come off and over time rust to the surface. I haven't seen that on my mast yet, but I know you can also get brass wool that doesn't have the same problem.
