I'll be getting my oday 23 back in the water soon. Should I think about cleaning up the mast and boom at all (I think it's aluminum) or is it best to leave the oxidation as is? Is there a specific cleaner I should use.

Clean and wax it

I use Nevr-Dull on the mast and boom followed by a coat of either Collinite Fleetwax or Trewax Boat Wax. These are both excellent paste waxes given excellent ratings by Practical Sailor. Apply the Nevr-Dull, buff it out. Apply the paste wax, buff it out. You're done and the spars are sealed for the season and look great. Regards, Tom

Putty for old holes?

Before this step, what do we use to fill holes from removed hardware? There used to be some sandable grey stuff that dried like porcelain. I have no idea how to identify it beyond that and would appreciate suggestions. BTW I removed a lot of stuff from both mast and boom but not necessarily because I am relocating it. Some of this stuff deserves to stay off. I did however relocate the new mainsheet bail by about 3/4 inch in order to re-use one of the old jiffy-reefing track's holes-- because more holes in structural aluminium is never good. JC
