Mast beam reinforcement plate.

Hi Folks, New guy here. I just bought this boat after doing much research on vessels. I settled on the Vega due to its reputation. I live in Alaska and will try to do incremental restoration over the winter months. The first thing I think would be prudent is the mast beam support plate. The question is, where can I find one? I can machine my own but would prefer a manufactured one due to its known and proven design. As I make my living restoring antique aircraft nothing is too difficult for me. I am just very new to sailing and appreciate seasoned advice. Cheers...

You do no need to order it. Just use back venner which has the same dimension as front beam, like prototype , order peas of stainless steel and DIY. Did last winter for my Vega

Thanks for the info tymish. I have considered doing just that. I was hoping the prefabricated plate would not be too expensive. Did you put a plate both fore and aft or just in the aft position? I would think one fore and aft would offer the best results. From: "tymish_z@... I think aluminum would be a better choice. Less weight where you don't need it. 1/4"thk should be OK. Well fastened every 4"-6".

I like the thought of aluminum as well. A structural grade such as 5056 T3 would be plenty strong. I just wondered about corrosion, especially if using structural stainless bolts contributing to dissimilar metal corrosion. I guess a barrier coat of epoxy primer would help prevent this.

I watched some of his videos. I would love to contact him and get some ideas from somebody who has seasoned vega experience.

Wow, now that's a great idea! My traditional mind is still geared toward old school techniques. New composite materials are strong and corrosion resistant. Thanks for the input. Keep it coming.

I really like this idea as I believe that the metal will create a hard point upsetting the normal relationship between bulkhead and deckhead. Carbon fiber is an awesome idea.

You could get some corrosion around the bolt head, however it would be very little due to the small contact area. Anodize or chromate the alum, and perhaps use some nonmetallic washers/sleeves around the bolts.

Manning is far too lavish in his praise. There are any number of more experienced and knowledgeable VEGAtarians participating in this forum and contributing to the AVA web site. I turn to the Yahoo group and americanvega.org as much as anyone else for advice, information, tricks, tips and ideas.I like the idea of using carbon fiber to reinforce the mast beam. Since we are in the planning stages of our next major refit, we may incorporate that into the project."Fair winds"Chuck RoseSV Lealea, V1860

Hi Chuck, There is nothing wrong with praise as long as it is well deserved and well founded. I have watched some of your videos and was well pleased with the boat. I would not have purchased a Vega if I had not seen it in real life action. Thank you for that. My first impression was it was too small till I watched your" returning to Hawaii" video. I am now the proud owner of a Vega that needs a little attention. My first boat viewing was a International Folkboat 26 which seemed tiny. That lead me to believe a 27 Vega was small as well. No so, I can stand up straight in the Vega. Anyway, I am new to sailing and could use whatever advice you can yield to a newby. My background is in major aircraft structural repair and commercial pilot. I have the boat on a trailer sitting in my driveway in Soldotna. I want to repair it incrementally as to be a sail-able project so it is not on the hard for several years. I will operate out of Homer in the summers. Let me know if your nearby. I chose to go with Steve Birch's stainless steel plate as it is the most recognizable as a repair and is of a known structural value. There are other dynamic forces I would like to address on the bulkheads, but since I am inexperienced I am holding out to the Vega population for advice. Oh yeah, I liked the carbon fiber idea as well, I just don't want to be the first to do it without a structural engineer calculating the stress, strains, etc so I am comfortable with material thickness and bonding agents, etc.

Hello Manning,   I too was hooked by Chuck and Laura’s adventures. Funny just how much these two folks have moved others to jump in and go for it. There is one little thing I wish Chuck would have pointed out in his videos. I have hit my head so many times inside the cabin I have lost count. Now Chuck must be well under 6 foot or he just knows when to duct.  Larry WillsSV -Lilly Too -2761  Sent from Mail for Windows 10    From: manningharvey@... A sailor earns his reputation on the sea by his actions, not by singing his own praise\'s. I have watched every hour of your\'s and Laura\'s video\'s. And from the moment I saw you heave with sea sickness over the side of Lealea when she was swimming from Hawaii to Oregon in the first video\'s and all your trials at sea. With just one more week to go! lol... You never lost confidence in the vessel swimming beneath your feet. That is the moment I decided I wanted an Albin Vega swimming under mine. I have been professionally sailing in one form or another over 45 years. And I must say I have learned so much about my boat and her ability\'s over the past three years largely from you and ownership. I am proud to announce that Viking #3361 will complete her major two month refit next week. I value your advice and friendship immensely. Thank you Laura and Chuck Rose. Manning

Hi There and WelcomeWhere are you at in Alaska? I'm in Palmer and am in the process of rebuilding a Vega. I've been at this a while but had to take a long break. Hopefully will be back at it before too long. The boat is now bare hull and gutted (no bulkheads). Most of the hull painting is done. Still have lots to learn. It would be great to see another project in process and learn more of preparing for cruising Alaska. John Nielsn
