I have a 1981 Hunter 30. The mast has no access plate on it. I want to run new wire for deck lights / spreader ltgs & steaming ltg. Is there a way to cut an access plate near the bottom of the mast w/o reducing the mast integrity? Or should I just wait till fall when I plan on pulling the stick and do it then. I would like the ability to get at the bottom in case I need to replace a halyard.

Not sure cutting a hole is a good idea. Weakens the mast. You don't need to get at the bottom in order to replace a halyard.

on the mast step where the halards exit the mast step their is a plate holding the sheaves if it's the same as the 27s its removeable and will give you access to the inside of the mast.
