My wife and I are considering buying a Marlowe Hunter 40. Anyone have any experience with this model?

We have owned our H33 for 8 years and have loved it.

I have a 38 and in reviewing the specs it appears to be essentially the same vessel. While I haven't sailed the 40 I have been through a couple at boat shows and it appears virtually identical. My brother has your 33 which I've sailed a number of times. You'll probably find the 40 slightly faster in 5 to 10 kt air than the 33. In 15 kt+ you'll need to reef where the 33 can handle full sail.

It is my impression the 40 was rushed to production by Marlow a couple of years back when they acquired Hunter to make the fall boat shows and quality suffered. On recent models I've seen I think the quality is about the same as your 33 and my 38.

I absolutely would not consider a blue hull - it will be a maintenance nightmare in sun prone regions.

Frankly you probably own one of the best boats Hunter ever made - however an extra 5-6 feet makes a major difference from a comfort factor at the dock.

Thanks for your comment. Actually, the H38 specs appear to be more comparable to those of the new MH37 than to the 40, although oddly, MH 37 is generally slightly larger than the 38. We do love our 33, but looking for something a bit roomier and heavier. I do have mixed emotions though.

We have a new 2013 under deposit. Brought our 2008 H36 to the dealer yesterday for the trade. I believe that the hull design of the 40 is different than the H38. The 40 has a distinct chine. I like the cockpit layout which enables the helmsman to control just about everything from the helm, without disturbing the passengers. This works for me, because it seems I single hand even when I've got a few others on the boat.

As far as quality goes, it appears to me that the fit and finish is much better than our 2008. I think that the materials used are of a bit higher quality, with the exception of the cabinet and drawer latches. They seem to be plastic. The 2008 fit and finish was light years ahead of the way my 2001 260 was put together. That was just filled with 5200 every place two parts didn't exactly come together right.

We didn't order any. This is a demo boat that I had my eye on since last season when it was at a boat show. It has the Mariner package, the Marlow 40th edition package, upgraded alternator, 54hp engine, inverter, quiet flush, freezer, high water bilge alarm, complete electronics based on Raymarine e-95 wide, autopilot, bow thruster, AGM batteries, full canvas, teak in the cockpit and transom, blue painted hull. This is a much nicer boat than I'd ever thought I could own. There are a few more options, but those are the highlights. PM me if you want a more complete list.

Closed on ours today

Finally closed on our MH40. Pretty excited, though I'll have to contain most of that until spring.

I took delivery on a MH40 early December 2014. She has the Mariner package and the Marlow limited edition package. Nice boat. It was a 2013 dealer demo. The wall paper is bleeding a orange-ish color that does not look very nice. The dealer said he would pay to have the problem taken care of as part of the deal. After I bought the boat I took a tour through the Hunter plant. The Hunter people know that this occurs. So now I have 2 doors and a bulkhead that need to be repaired. Does anybody have knowledge of how to do this?
I bought this boat based on prior Hunter experience. Chartered a 41 in Tampa for 10 days. If this boat handles as well as the 41, I will be impressed, although I expect it to handle better.

We liked the wrapped bulkheads too, but our boat was a demo and had the all wood doors and bulkheads. We didn't order the boat because the deal for the in-stock boat was pretty decent. .
