I used a black wide body sharpy to mark the rode before I ran it into the locker and sill see how it holds up. I used 1 strand for 50', 2 strands for 100' etc.

I had those on my rode with my old capstan only windlass and the capstan plucked them out first time I used it. Maybe they will work better with a rope/chain gypsy.

This stuff works great for marking lines all sorts of colors are available. I first found it in the markdown area of a local auto parts store, though I'd try it out. Spray paint works well but does tend to rub off the line and marks up the hull when dragged across it. Cleans up easy but is another chore that requires time and effort.

We use it to mark our rodes to make them ugly and unappealing.

I just painted the marks on a new rode (it's been in use long enough to rinse off the spinning lubes). Thanks for the reminder. Super easy, once and done. 50' 75' 100'. Plain old latex paint I had on-hand. Based on past expereince, it will last as long as the rope, though I will likely freshen it up once.

I had those WITH NO WINDLASS and they disappeared after a few uses. They were useless.

I have tried strings and ribbons several times over the years. Also, cable ties and pop-in chain markers. Most simply, they all required some level of maintenance that paint never took. Sometimes they jammed in a windlass, requiring extraction. All paint took was refreshing every 4-5 years, and even that is optional. I wears off the surface of chain but remains visible inside the links. With rope it remains in the crevices and as stains; have you ever really washed heavy paint out of a shirt?).
