Marking documentation number permanently in boat

Just wondering how other owners of documented vessels mark the documentation number inside, in a truly permanent way? In a wooden boat you can carve it into the main beam. What about my Catalina 36? Vinyl stick-on numbers with clear epoxy resin over?

Vinyl shops can make a stencil

The same shop that makes the vinyl lettering can make stencils.

We had a stencil made and placed it under our galley sink. Just apply the stencil to the cleaned hull and paint it with small brush. It may take two coats but it works well.

This site

Take a look at the documentation placard that this site sells. I bought one for my boat and it looks a lot better than the vinyl lettering.

Teak board

I used a router, freehand, to route out the numbers sketched onto a teak board to the specified size. I painted the routed fields black and stained the background to match my boat. I then bonded it to the hull with 3M 5200 to meet the CG permanency requirement. It looks good. Per email confirmation from the CG, I bonded them in my port cockpit locker...they are immediately visible when opening the locker.

Routed unto a board glassed to the hull through

an interior comparment. It has to meet permanency requirement.

Interestingly,

The CG's definition of 'permanent' is reasonably practical... removal has to damage the hull or leave visible evidence of forcable removal. Thus, mounting plaques by permanent adhhesives is permitted, but mounting them by screws is not. Painting is OK, but vinyl letters w/o more is probably not.

I carved

in the lazerette with a dremel tool the numbers in the hull itself. I made sure the size met the CG specification and freehanded it. after I was done, I took a permant black magic marker and filled it in. it meets the requirement, is not readily visible, and was done quick easy and in less than 15 to 20 minutes.

Carved Document #

On my 99 model H310 I carved, then burned with wood burning tip, and then varnished to match the teak facing of the shelf above the engine cover and behind the ladder. Glued and screwed back into place. Posted all other required placards on the bulkheads on each side. All CG posting requirements in one convenient and yet discreet location. Was boarded in LA Harbor for inspection and was in compliance in all respects.
