Excellent

Been a few times and it is excellent. They have a new exhibit of the Monitor including the recovered turret. The exhibit was still under construction the last time I was there, but looked quite impressive. They also have a good small boat display and research area. I would highly recommend a visit, plan for most of the day.

Mariner's Museum

I did a day trip there last summer and thought it was really good. The small collections are very well done and the ongoing conservation of the Monitor artifacts is facinating. The full scale replica of the Monitor located outside of the museum building is less then interesting. The theatre in the round presentation of the Monitor/Merrimac battle is worth the price of admission alone. The drive from Rockville, MD took a bit longer then I thought it would - I think about 3 1/2 hours each way so it was a long day. The only food near the museum is fast food from national chains (ugh) but there is a small cafe in the museum. All in all, I was very pleased and would recommend a trip there.

I was there in

1971 while stationed at Ft. Eustis, VA. It was great then, probably better now.

The Best

I think MM is the best maritime museum I have ever been to. I may be a bit bias since I grew up in Newport News, but When I went a few years ago, it was way better than St. Michael's or Calvert MM in Solomons. Rob Solomons, MD

To bad they don't have water access

Great news everyone thanks! Checking the location via Google maps and see the don't have any access via water. To bad, would have been nice to anchor the boat and dingy in. Jim S/V Java

Quick Walk Next Door

If you get to the Mariners Museum, go next door 9across a 50' parking lot) to the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. They don't call it an 'art gallery' because there are no permanent exhibits. Every time we go there, there is a new, different, interesting to all ages exhibit that won't be there long!
