Mariner 9.9 O/b Question

Hi Folks, I own a 1996 Mariner 9.9 o/b. Went sailing yesterday and the combination
steering/throttle handle failed to turn. It felt very tight. I could not engage slow, fast or neutral mode. I had to kill the engine to stop. I attempted a remedy by loosening the throttle friction knob without results. Do you Mariner owners have any troubleshooting suggestions before I call a mechanic. Thanks.

How much "routine maintenance" do you do on this outboard? It could just need to be disassembled and cleaned.

In most outboards the twist-grip linkage is fairly straightforward. Twisting the grip pulls a cable, which in turn pulls on the throttle linkage of the carb.

It shouldn't be difficult to determine the problem, it could even be just lubrication of the twist-grip, but if you're not comfortable working on engines, a good outboard service depot should be able to fix this in an hour or less.

If it was just serviced, did it have a problem before being serviced? If not, then the problem was probably something done by the servicer...

Read the owners manual or don't, I don't care . I am however amazed at the number of members who post a question expecting to be spoon fed answers before they have checked the owners manual or installation instructions. Capable of using a computer but unwilling to read words on paper.

While I love the art of sarcasm, you're right, if it doesn't come off as funny, it can sound rude.

Since most of us are guilty at one time or another, I'll give Ross a pass.

Chambao- back to your problem- it sounds as though the cable is being pinched... since a "pro" just serviced the unit, I doubt he'd charge any additional to take a look, but if that's not possible (or easy, since that motor isn't easy to lug around!), I'd recommend taking off the cowl (cover) and see if you can visually spot a problem. As stated prior, the mechanics of the throttle are very simple, even if you don't have any experience. If you can't spot a problem, you may need help. It sounds as though you were sailing when it suddenly stopped working, which would lead me to believe the cable has seized, and needs replacing.

I appreciate your suggestions, and have now lubricated the tiller handle and cable.
There is more movement now, so hopefully that has done the trick. This is a very useful site and I've found tons of helpful information. Wishing you all a happy easter.
