Marine Toilet Question

A toilet question for those with manual toilet without a macerator. Some toilet paper will inevitably end up in the toilet. Do you have any problems emptying the tank by gravity or suction without a macerator, or does it get clocked up? Electric toilets have a built in macerator but I'm considering going to manual. Thanks.

When I ran those toilets, I was careful to use toilet paper that was "septic" friendly. There are brands that are sold to RV owners but they tend to be pricey. Peggy Hall had a really cool way of checking - take a sheet and float it in water, after a short time, take like chop sticks or some stirrer and swish it around - if the paper nearly disintegrates - that's the kind of stuff you want. (Sorry Peggy if I butchered your explanation)

We do not have macerator and have no issues. Use single ply TP not the fancy thick puffy stuff. Another way to test the TP is put some in a jar of water and shake it. TP that breaks up quickly is ok, if it doesn't break up don't use it.

The part of the equation is the holding tank treatment. Products like Zaal No-Flex digester or Camco TSP feed the aerobic (good) bacteria and they break down the TP and other contents in the holding tank.

Finally rinsing the tank with fresh water after pumping out helps to keep sludge from forming and solidifying.

There's a little more to it than that: Tear off a couple of sheets and put them in glass or jar of water. Come back in an hour or two and shake the jar or stir the water. If the water is "milky" and all you see is "snow," that TP is safe to use in any marine toilet. But if the sheets are still intact or mostly intact, try another brand.

Fwiw, maceration really isn't necessary because solids--which are 75% water-- and quick dissolve TP dissolve fairly quickly in water and are broken up by even a manual pump anyway. Always add water to the bowl ahead of solids.

Hope y'all are enjoying the long weekend while remembering that it's called MEMORIAL Day because all who served gave some, it's the day in which we remember those who gave all.

I have a manual head, an older Raritan.

I cannot quite get used to the idea of saving the TP in a bag :yikes:

So, yes, I flush it. And I haven’t had any problems. I do use a cheap single-ply made for RV’s ( from Walmart IIRC).

Should you ever degenerate to the point where you DO get used to the idea of saving used TP, I would think it's just about time to pack it in and check out.

I have read of several peopIe on this site who think that is exactly the way to do it. I think it's the most warped and perverted thinking I have ever heard of on a boat.

I go on whale watch trips when on Maui every year…and the boat captain…mind you a 60 foot steel power catamaran…always advises the tourists NOT to throw the TP in the head….I get not throwing other paper products in the head, but TP? I don’t want to go in there after some big guy takes his daily dump and throws a lot of nasty TO in the trash can !

Unbelieveable.

It is not warper and perverted. A rather parochial point of view frankly. But each to their own. I prefer to honor the rules on whoever's boat I'm on, whether I agree or disagree.

I find it not only warper, but also warped and perverted as well.

Dressing for dinner on someone's boat is rather parochial. Squirreling your used toilet paper away in a bag on someone's boat is just stupid. I would choose not to be on their boat and encourage their stupidity, thank you.

Brilliant! Nothing more I can say.

Different perspectives, different society: While in Mexico years ago, at a large plant: Stalls had trash cans for just such a thing. So I wouldn't call it perverted or warped. It is different.

I think what is important is you don't need to throw TP into a receptacle, simply use the correct product.

There is one thing that should NEVER be flushed in any marine toilet, manual or electric: wet wipes. They do not dissolve, break down or break up, nor can they be chopped up or shredded. They WILL (not "can, WILL!") clog plumbing and jam macerator blades. Unless you want to deal with a nasty problem, your only choices are to forbid guests from using them (at least of which will decide "just one won't hurt") or mandate that they be put in a ziplock bag (you'll leave a supply next to the toilet marked just for this purpose) and placed in the trash.

You have my permission to post any or all of this post in the head.

No, Ralph, it's not! Marine TP is cheap enough to not worry about the cost. As a matter of fact, per-roll, it's cheaper than regular Scott's TP. Of course, you can always use your hand, and then wash your hand after every poop, if you're worried about the cost.

I have also experienced this in Mexico….we had to encourage our Mexican employees to flush their TP!

It just doesn’t seem very sanitary to me…

How creative !

Now, did you think of that all by yourself or did you read about it somewhere and thought it worth remembering to nonchalantly drop at a cocktail party sometime ? Makes all the women think you're well travelled and cultured.
