Does anyone know what a marine survey form is and where I could find one? My insurance requires that I have a survey done, but no one around here knows exactly what it is or where to get one. Thanks for any info.

Look in the yellow pages under Marine ...

..surveyor or Surveyor, Marine. You may have to go to a seaport city to find one...

There is no form

A marine survey is an inspection of the boat by a qualified surveyor...it's similar to a home inspection. The surveyor inspects the boat and writes a report about its condition and value and notes anything that needs to be corrected because it puts the boat at risk. I hate to disagree with Joe, but the last place you want to look for a marine surveyor is the Yellow Pages...'cuz except for cargo ship surveors, the good ones don't advertise..they don't have to. And unless your surveyor is on the list of acceptable surveyors, they won't accept his report. So call your insurance co and ask them for the names of qualified surveyors in your area. Depending upon the size of your boat and whether your insurer requires a haulout, expect to pay $200-300 for it. I'm amazed that NO one in your area knows what a marine survey is...surely at least ONE person has had enough experience to know that the only way to know what you're getting when you buy a used boat is to make any offer "subject to survey and sea trial."

Bill, look up the BoatUS web site.

Bill: I think you can find a qualified marine surveyor on the BoatUS website. Who is your insurer?

Good info Steve

Those are the two most accepted organizations. An insurance survey performed by a marine surveyor is usually required but I have seen forms that some insurance companies will mail to their clients. These are not damage claim forms but survey forms required for insurance. Not only are there cargo surveyors in the yellow pages but also there are engine surveyors, yacht and small craft surveyors, damage claim surveyors and insurance surveyors. Word of mouth can be difficult for people who are new to boating and don't know where to look. It is form of informational advertising that most surveyors use. Sort of like advertising to sell books!

Surveyors

Bill, I would look on the internet for a list of marine surveyors. You might try either the US surveyors Association or Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS). Both these agencies require experience and testing to become affiliated with the association. Most insurance companies will accept a survey from both these agencies. You might also check with your insurance company for a list of surveyors they approve Good luck Charlie Gruetzner

Marine Survey Form

With respect to Peggy, my insurer, State Farm, had a form they wanted filled out by a surveyor. I sent them a photocopy of the whole survey report I had done when I bought the boat and they accepted it and may for you, but if you call the broker and ask for a copy (s)he should be able to provide it. Then find a surveyor as the others recommend. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

But the surveyor did have to look at the boat

in order to fill it out. And it does have to be filled out and signed by a surveyor acceptable to the insurance company. The questions was whether there's a form that a boat owners can just fill out and submit...and the answer to that is no.
