A marine survey is an inspection of the boat by a qualified surveyor...it's similar to a home inspection. The surveyor inspects the boat and writes a report about its condition and value and notes anything that needs to be corrected because it puts the boat at risk.I hate to disagree with Joe, but the last place you want to look for a marine surveyor is the Yellow Pages...'cuz except for cargo ship surveors, the good ones don't advertise..they don't have to. And unless your surveyor is on the list of acceptable surveyors, they won't accept his report. So call your insurance co and ask them for the names of qualified surveyors in your area. Depending upon the size of your boat and whether your insurer requires a haulout, expect to pay $200-300 for it.I'm amazed that NO one in your area knows what a marine survey is...surely at least ONE person has had enough experience to know that the only way to know what you're getting when you buy a used boat is to make any offer "subject to survey and sea trial."
