I read an article recently at trailersailors.com that praised the virtues of a product called "Marine Penetrol". Apparently you clean your fiberglass first using Soft Scrub with bleach and a scotch-brite. Then you wipe this stuff on, give it a minute or so to work its magic and then wipe the excess off. It's that simple. The result is a smooth, durable finish...not a mirror finish like wax, but then you don't have to buff and you can touch up ant any time. I've been trying to track down this mystery product for the last few weeks. I'd ask the author of the article (Gary "Doc" Hanson) but he died last year. Has anyone ever heard of this product, and if so, who makes it and where can I get some? Thanks in advance. Peter (dirty)H23 "Raven"

Marine Penetrol...google helped

I went to google and typed in Marine Penetrol, the link below is the first one it showed. I was down at the boat yard last weekend talking with a friend who was using it on her faded red glass hull, it looked okay. I'll wait until later this year to see what she thinks and how it looks. I've never used the company in the link below, I can't recommend them, I just let Google find them. Geof

Be careful

Penerol is like a varnish. When you put it on it gets a hard shell finish. However, like most oil based products it has a life expectancy. You have to sand to remove it. r.w.landau

I used some on my 27' hunter a few years ago. I applied it to the trim stripe on the top of the hull and the boot stripe. It made them look pretty good. It was going well 2.5 years later when I sold the boat. I would be careful of using softscrub on the gelcoat. It is just like sandpaper. I just cleaned the hull and applied the Penetrol. With all that in mind - I have not used it since. It is like a varnish and I am afraid that I will have to maintain it once it is on the boat. I go for a good clean boat and a wax job. Good luck.

The Marine penetrol article

Here's the URL for the Marine Penetrol article at trailersailor.com. You can copy it and paste into the Address window of your web browser. I also pasted it below as a link but I don't know if it'll work. http://www.trailersailor.com/content/projects/read.cgi?1 Peter

I have used penetrol. . .

on a power boat I used to own several years ago. The boat had a two tone hull, white, and dark blue. The blue part of the hull had a chalking problem, I tried compound, polish , waxes, electric buffing , washing with a solution of white vinegar etc, nothing worked. I remembered penetrol from years ago when I worked for a Ferrari dealership on Long Island, The prep guys used to use penetrol to prep the Ferrari's. I had also used some on a black car i used to own (I remember the prep guy telling me it works best on darker colors). I tried it on the blue portion of my hull and it worked quite well. Not FANTASTIC but more then satisfactory. The application was not as easy as you describe, after applying, let dry to a haze then it must be buffed out , comparable to using a wax. I never had to remove the old coat, If I applied a coat in May, the chaulking would start to reappear mid to late Aug. andI would redo the process. I tried it on a small section of white hull, but the results did not justify the effort. I used it on the blue section for about 3 years with no problems. Chris s/v Tidesong

penetrol

A guy I know who is rigger ,fiberglass repair all around very good boat repair , refuses to work on fiberglass that has been coated with penetrol, at least that is what he said in wm last year, he may have been exagerating but I could tell he did not like it . why dont you used poli glow , it works great and comes off with poli prep . I tried it last year and am sold, good Luck Mike B
