Marine Investment opportunity?

I have a chunk of $ I need to reinvest, there's not much out there to profitably do with it except real estate, but before I do that I'm looking for something I'd enjoy doing more with it than being a landlord :-( I realize there is not much of an opportunity to buy and resell used sailboats (as much as I'd enjoy that), the used sailboat market is saturated. I see no profit possibility there. Just seeking ideas, good investment opportunities that would be sailing/ marine oriented. Or!, <G> some one with a great idea who needs a backer........ I'm networking here, sorry if that's out of line on HOW forum. Regards, Jim (H-27, C-24)

A second thought <G>

Hey, maybe buy Hunter stock? <G> I think Hunter is an employee owned company? Hunter stock? Is there such a thing? Jim

Well, have you thought of

buying me a new head sail? ;D Tom s/v GAIA

Yes, I have thought of.........

Yes, Tom, I have thought about that possibility. <G> There is a local and very highly rated Sail Loft for sale, expertise in both cruising and racing sails. I've thought about that possibility, and hell, if you run it for me you'll have a perk! Problem is that although I've been sailing and racing for 30 years, I have no expertise or knowledge about the sailmaking business. The owner would love to sell it...... interested in running it? Free sails Tom! (or maybe for cost of cloth) Regards, Jim

Local information

Just in case there are any local Barnegat Bay lurkers <G>, it's Mark Beaton/Omega Sails that is for sale. Loft must be moved from current location, no option.

Another thought..........

What do you think the possibility is of buying a 40-50 something sailboat and running B&B style overnight short cruise charters? Problem there is that I have no Capt License, I'd need to hire a Captain to run the boat. I've been known as Capt Jim on the net since 1996, but that's only because that's what the bridge tenders call me when I hail them LOL. Another possibility however. Open to ideas. Jim :)

Sounds a lot like being a landlord. Not only do you have to house them, you get to feed and entertain them too. Sounds like this would be a seasonal business in NJ. Perhaps you would have to run this venture in St. Croix;) The boat angle aside, do you want to be in the hospitality business? At least on land, the property has a good chance of appreciating in value.

Party boats...

Jim.. With your capital, why not buy the a few boats then lease them to charter companies or excursion/party contractors. Let me give you an example: In the Newport Beach area there is an outfit called "Adventures at Sea" They coordinate boating excursions in Newport Harbor and to Catalina Island. A wedding for instance, or a christmas party. They advertise a fleet of various sized boats available for the events. This fleet of boats are owned as a separate company by the father of the couple that runs AAS. In addition there is a separate catering company run by the mother of the couple. It's similar to a travel agency, tour operator, airline relationship. They also cooperate with outside brokers. The boat owner provides the skipper, mate, and stewards (waiters/bartenders) and arranges for the permits. The physician/dad loves boats and this is his way of being around them, having fun, and making a little money to boot. I think they have four boats now, from 60 to 125 feet, that he acquired through foreclosure sales.

A Suggestion

I recently took a USCG Captain's class, and met a charter/sailing school owner that has a plan that may interst you. The details of his idea aren't on the website, but you can contact him from the website (www.texascharters.com). Great guy, and a really interesting plan.

Captain's License

By the way, I just completed the requirements for my captain's license (100 gross tons inspected inland, and OUPV for near coastal). It wouldn't take much to convince me to work with someone that's wants to do B&B type charters. Feel free to email me at hparsons@parsonsys.com if you're seriously considering something like that.

Reading

Hi Jim - I'm sure you're not the only sailor who likes the idea of figuring out way to work business into our passion for sailing (me included). Although perhaps a little dated (1996), check out the book "Making Money with Boats", by Fred Edwards. This book helps with a lot of details running charter type businesses and might spark some good ideas. Best of luck and keep us posted! Trevor

SailTime Base Owner

Jim, I spoke with the new SailTime Base Owner in Baltimore last weekend. He is working with SailTime and a local Hunter dealer to put together shared ownership packages for new Hunter sailboats in the Baltimore area. Either he or another owner/investor buys a new boat and he gets up to 8 lease members to pay a monthly fee for shared use of the boat. As I understand it, for the new Huther 33 he just put into our marina, the boat owner/investor gets $1,000/mo from SailTime guaranteed for 5 years. Boat maintenance and slip fees are paid by SailTime. The boat owner/investor can either sell the boat at the end of 5 years or gets a guaranteed trade in credit toward a new boat.

You won't make a million $ ...

My wife runs a B&B in Newport and during the summer to get Mid week business I kicked in a sailing option ... Basically I am retired and had problems getting crew mid week. So now I get crew and she gets to rent empty rooms. Last year we booked midweeks earlier than weekends. And let me tell you Sailors are way better than most of the people who come into Newport during the summer. I don't make much for the boat ... but then again it's a 20-yr. old J30 so it doesn't have a mortgage, and I get out sailing during the week. Picked up my Six pack 20 years ago when you actually had to go to Boston for a half day test. See link for my "sails" pitch.
